Padgett To Whom it May Concern: =A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0Mr. Thomas C. Padgett has shared with me a copy of the custody evaluation prepared for the court at Madisonville, KY. In reading through the comprehensive and detailed evaluation prepared by clinical psychologist Dr. Donna Nichols, I would call to the attention of the court at least one serious omission which Mr. Padgett deems critical to a fair and complete conclusion of the proceedings. Namely, an investigation and consideration of the cultic influences which are referred to numerous times in the body of the report. This specific issue [Scientology] is not enumerated in the "conclusion" section of the custody evaluation. If it is not taken into consideration, it will create a serious impediment to the exercise of Mr. Padgett's parental rights and duties. Sincerely, Paul Wm. To Whom it May Concern: It is the position of the Cult Awareness Network (CAN) that the practices (although not the beliefs themselves) of any controversial group which the public regularly complains should be examined as a primary parental risk factor for any child custody evaluation, particularly in regard to psychological effect such practices might have on a child's wellbeing. We are aware Thomas Carter Padgett has expressed concern to the court about the influence of Scientology on his children. CAN has no first hand knowledge of any particulars about either the exposure to the practices of Scientology of Laura Vannoy Padgett or of Laura Vannoy Padgett's and Thomas Carter Padgett's children. However, CAN has received hundreds of complaints about the practices of Scientology, and maintains files which document criminal activity associated with the group in the past and investigations by governments world-wide into Scientology's practices, as well as allegations by past members on a more than occasional basis of unethical activities by Scientology-linked entities. If, in fact, an exposure to the practices of Scientology on an ongoing basis does exist in regard to Laura Vannoy Padgett and/or Laura Vannoy Padgett and Thomas Carter Padgett, then we support Thomas Carter Padgett in his request that the court examine information which he wishes to present to the court for it's consideration in making determinations in the interest of the children. CAN encourages the court to review the material of excellent professional experts such as psychiatrist Louis Jolyon West, and psychologists Paul Martin and Margaret Thaler Singer on the issue of the psychological effects on children of the use of the powerful influence techniques in a deceptive or unethical manner, and to seriously consider information Thomas Carter Padgett wishes to put before the in regard to this issue and his children's wellbeing. I had personal exposure to scientology in 1988, and have educated myself since then by talking with former scientologists, reading about cults, including scientology, and have concluded that this group can be seriously harmful to the mental health of both children and adults. I have always believed prevention is the best policy in health care, so how could I support a child being exposed to the teachings of a group that is identified by experts in the health care field, as a dangerous cult. Experts in this area including: Dr. Margaret Singer and Dr. J. West have stated that "Scientology" is a "dangerous cult." It's members are led to believe they do things by "free will." However, upon leaving the group, ex-members I have met, all have come to realize, their free will had been compromised. Can you imagine the damage that could occur to children, if adults led into the group can so easily be fooled? =A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0Because, the Scientologists believe that, the end justifies the means when it comes to furthering the group goals, they can justify just about any kind of behavior, legal or illegal. Children often get in the way of achieving their statistics, so they can easily be justifiably neglected. Since they believe they are superior to outsiders, they limit their children's potential for growth by interacting with the "real world." =A0 =A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0Scientologists claim superior intellect and skill development, but ask and ex-scientologists how long it took them to "catch up" with their peers once leaving scientology, and trying to find a "real job" in the "real world." God help the children, not false prophets. Sincerely, Robert E. Geary, D.D.S., F.A.G.D. DAVIS, Pys.D. Practice of Clinical Psychology Lexington, KY 40514 (606) 223-3531 June 20, 1994 This is a brief letter in response to the concerns that Mr. Tom Padgett has regarding the suppressive and divisive effects of the belief systems such as scientology. As a Licensed Clinical Psychologist, I have had the occasion to encounter Mr. Thomas Padgett. His concerns for his children are both profound and sincere. His reaction to the sense of helplessness (which may be generated by any group influence serving to isolate or separate individuals based on believers and non-believers) is brought to sharp focus with respect to his relationship with his two biological children. This relationship has been and will be jeopardized by a belief system which characterizes those outside the system (or the unfaithful to group as suppressive personalities or potential sources of trouble.) His fear, although seemingly dramatic, stems from the concern of being a victim of disconnection. Disconnection is one of the strategic issues acknowledged and well documented in the books of scientological principles. I am responding in the form of a letter in support of the measures Mr. Padgett may have to express his fears about being separated from his children, but to underscore the clear reality that any group organization which attemps to isolate itself and separate itself from those not totally in agreement with its principles can do potentially great harm to interpersonal relationships and family networks outside of that belief system. To restate my viewpoint, these words are in support of the need for families and participants of interpersonal relationships to communicate in the name of love and constructive action outside of any specific group value system.
